He was no longer the disciplined writer who outlined, edited, rewrote, and restructured his works, the way he did with his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. He was tangled in debt. His wife Zelda, once his muse and love, was confined to an insane asylum, and their relationship—once heralded as the love of the century—was now broken with bitterness and resentment. In 1936, he sold three essays, known as the Crack-Up series, to The Saturday Evening Post. Though the series received much attention, his closest friends—John Dos Passos, Maxwell Perkins, Ernest Hemingway—found the confessional essays contemptible and embarrassing. Fitzgerald, who is now remembered as the great American novelist, wrote a dizzying array of nonfiction essays during his short life—indeed, they and his short stories are what sustained him financially.
